A crossword fed by a letter circle

PeopleFun released Wordscapes in 2017 for iOS and Android, and it is often described as a mix of Boggle and crossword puzzles. You get a circle of letters at the bottom of the screen, usually somewhere between 3 and 7 of them, and you swipe through the circle to spell words. Every correct grid word drops into a crossword board above the circle, and because the board is a real crossword, answers cross each other and share letters. If you want the studio's backstory instead of the gameplay, we cover PeopleFun's history separately.

Two kinds of words matter in Wordscapes, and a solver helps with both. Grid words are the ones the level requires. Bonus words are valid words your letters can form that are not in the grid, and PeopleFun pays one coin for each, but only the first time you complete that puzzle. The game does not accept every real word as a bonus, and it never accepts proper nouns, so part of the fun is finding out which of your candidates it takes. Public references list about 6,000 main levels, with later master levels that revisit them, plus a Daily Puzzle for extra rewards.

The most useful trick is to use the crossword grid to narrow things down. You can see the length of every empty slot, so set that number in the exact length field and the list collapses to words that actually fit. Crossing letters help too: type one into Advanced options and the list shrinks again. This is a different workflow from a pure letter-pool game like Word Cookies, where any word length is fair game, and closer in spirit to Word Connect, which also pairs a letter wheel with a crossword board.

A practical tip: work the grid first. Start with the longest slot, since a longer length rules out far more candidates than a short one, and let each solved word give you crossing letters for the next. Once the grid is full, clear the length field and read through what is left for bonus words. Spend those coins on hints only when you are truly stuck.

How it works

1
Enter your circle's letters.

Type the letters from the circle at the bottom of your Wordscapes screen, in any order.

2
Match a grid slot.

Count the empty squares in a slot and enter that number as the exact length, then add any crossing letters under Advanced options.

3
Sweep for bonus words.

Clear the length field and scan the remaining words for bonus coins. Not every real word will be accepted.

Common questions

What is the difference between grid words and bonus words in Wordscapes?

Grid words are the answers that fill the crossword grid, and you need all of them to finish the level. Bonus words are valid words you can spell from the same letters that are not part of the grid. They are optional, and PeopleFun says each one earns you a coin.

Do I earn coins for the same bonus words every time I replay a level?

No. According to PeopleFun, you only earn coins for a bonus word the first time you complete that puzzle, so replaying a level does not pay out again. Coins are what you spend on hints.

Why does Wordscapes reject a real word this tool shows me?

PeopleFun states that not all words are accepted as bonus words even when they are real, valid words, and that proper nouns such as places, people and days of the week never count. This tool also runs on its own dictionary rather than the game's, so expect some words to be rejected and a few rare ones the game accepts to be missing here.

How do I use the exact length field with the crossword grid?

Count the empty squares in one slot of the grid and type that number into the exact length field. Results shrink to words of that length. If a crossing word has already filled in a letter, add it under Advanced options with Starts with, Ends with or Must include to narrow the list further.

Does this tell me which words are actually in the grid?

No. It cannot see your board, so it lists every word your letters can form. The grid words are usually the common ones that fit a slot length you can see on screen, and the rest of the list is where bonus words come from.

Does this work for Wordscapes Uncrossed?

Yes. PeopleFun describes Wordscapes Uncrossed as an anagram game where you unscramble letters rather than fill a crossword grid, which is exactly what this tool does. Enter the letters shown and scan the results by length.

How many letters can I enter?

Public references describe the Wordscapes circle as holding 3 to 7 letters, and the tile row here has 8 slots so a longer circle would still fit. You only need to fill the tiles your level shows. Leave the rest empty.
