A different question than 'what words can I make'
Our Scrabble Word Finder answers "what words can my letters make, ranked by score." This tool answers something narrower and often just as useful: "exactly how many points is this specific word worth." Sometimes you already know the word you want to play and just need the number, without searching your whole rack for alternatives.
The calculation is simple: each letter's official Scrabble point value is looked up and added together. Q and Z carry the most weight at 10 points each, while common letters like E, A, and T sit at just 1 point, reflecting how often each letter shows up in English words.
Worth remembering: this is the word's raw value before any board bonuses. A modest word landing on a double or triple word square in an actual game can easily outscore a higher raw-value word placed on an ordinary square. Use this calculator to compare word options, then factor in your board position separately.
If you're deciding between two possible plays, run both through this calculator to compare their raw values directly before considering which one fits your available board space.
How it works
Any English word, up to 20 letters.
Each letter appears as a tile showing its individual point value.
The sum of every letter's value is shown below the tiles.
Common questions
Does this account for double or triple letter and word squares?
No, this calculates the word's base tile value only. Bonus squares depend on where you place the word on your specific board, which this tool has no way to know.
What if my word includes a blank tile?
This calculator assumes every letter is a real tile. If one letter in your word is actually a blank, subtract that letter's shown value from the total, since blanks always score 0 regardless of the letter they represent.
Are these official Scrabble letter values?
Yes, the standard English Scrabble point values are used, the same table our Scrabble Word Finder uses to rank results.
Can I check the value of a phrase or multiple words?
This calculator scores one word at a time. For a phrase, check each word individually and add the totals together yourself.
Why is my word's score different from what I remember scoring in a real game?
Almost always because of board bonuses. A real in-game score usually includes at least one letter or word multiplier, which this calculator intentionally leaves out since it only knows the word, not your board.
Do numbers or punctuation in my input count toward the score?
No, anything that isn't a letter is automatically ignored before scoring.
What's the highest-scoring letter in Scrabble?
Q and Z, tied at 10 points each. J and X follow at 8 points. The lowest-value letters (worth just 1 point) are A, E, I, O, U, L, N, R, S, and T, since they appear far more often in English words.
