Why this needed genuinely different logic, not a reskin

Every other tool on this site treats your letters like a physical rack: each tile can only be used once, so a word needing two E's requires two E's in your input. Spelling Bee works nothing like that. You're told which 7 letters are allowed, and you can use any of them as many times as a word needs, regardless of how many times each one is "given." That single rule change meant this tool needed its own matching logic from scratch rather than reusing the rack-based engine every other page shares.

The center letter adds a second layer: it's not just allowed, it's required. A word can use every other rule correctly and still fail if it's missing that one specific letter, so this tool checks for it explicitly rather than treating it as just another allowed character.

On pangrams specifically: finding one is often the fastest way to unlock a big chunk of your score in the real game, since pangrams are worth a bonus on top of their length. This tool flags every pangram it finds directly in your results, so you don't have to manually check whether a word happens to use all 7 letters.

A practical starting strategy: try combining the center letter with each of the other 6 letters as a pair, and build outward from there. Since pangrams need all 7 letters, they often reveal themselves once you've found a few solid words that already cover most of the set.

How it works

1
Enter the center letter.

This is the mandatory letter every valid word must contain.

2
Enter the other 6 letters.

These, plus the center letter, make up your full allowed set.

3
Review your results.

Every valid word is shown grouped by length, with pangrams clearly marked.

Common questions

Why can a word use a letter more times than I entered it?

Because that's how Spelling Bee actually works. Each of the 7 letters can be reused as many times as needed within a single word. A word like TOTAL only needs one T in your letter set, even though the word itself uses two.

Why is the center letter treated differently from the other 6?

Because it's mandatory. Every valid word must include the center letter at least once, so this tool rejects any match that doesn't contain it, exactly like the real game would.

What is a pangram, and why are some words tagged with it?

A pangram is a word that uses all 7 of your letters at least once. The real game gives bonus points for finding these, so this tool flags them directly in your results so you don't have to spot them manually.

Why do 3-letter words never appear in my results?

Spelling Bee has a hard 4-letter minimum. Even a perfectly valid 3-letter English word using only your allowed letters won't count in the actual game, so this tool filters them out from the start.

Does this use the exact same word list as the real game?

No, it checks against a general English dictionary rather than the New York Times' own curated list, which deliberately excludes very obscure words, proper nouns, and offensive terms. Most everyday answers will match, but treat any unusual result as a lead to verify, not a guarantee.

Can I enter fewer than 6 outer letters?

You can, though results will be based on whatever letters you've actually entered. For a real puzzle, entering all 7 letters (center plus 6 outer) gives the most accurate match to what the game would accept.

Why did a word I know is real not show up?

Check that every letter in the word is one of your 7 allowed letters. Even one letter outside that set disqualifies the word, no matter how common it is otherwise.
